2025 Events

Severe Storms in the Midwest & Southern U.S. | United States of America

Spring 2025: In May, destructive tornadoes and thunderstorms brought severe damage to Kentucky and Missouri. Previously in March, severe storms—including several dozen tornadoes—reached a broad swath of the United States. Striking at least seven states across the Midwest and South, the storms also contributed to wildfires and left many homes destroyed.

2024 Events

Wildfires in Southern Chile | Chile

February 2024: Southern Chile saw high temperatures and a series of forest fires, particularly in La Araucanía. Affected regions faced evacuation orders and were placed under a state of emergency.

Flooding in Bangladesh | Bangladesh

March 2024: A lengthy rainy season in Bangladesh led to widespread floods. More than 5 million people were affected, with over 300,000 in emergency shelters and in need of aid.

Spring Flooding in Kazakhstan | Kazakhstan

April 2024: Spring flooding from several major rivers in northern & western Kazakhstan had displaced over 100,000 people by mid-April.

Flash Flooding in Pakistan | Pakistan

April 2024: Extensive rain and glacial melting led to flash floods throughout Pakistan, including Khyber, Punjab, and Baluchistan provinces. This led to scores of casualties, as well as the destruction of farmland and thousands of buildings.

Flooding in Rio Grande do Sul Region | Brazil

April 2024: Intense rain caused flooding in southern Brazil, exacerbated by the collapse of several dams.

Flash Floods in Northern Afghanistan | Afghanistan

May 2024: Flash floods struck several provinces in northern Afghanistan. Many villages were left initially inaccessible amid reports of thousands of injuries and extensive loss of homes and livestock.

Landslides in Enga Province | Papua New Guinea

May 2024: A landslide struck the remote Enga Province of Papua New Guinea, leaving some areas under more than 20ft of debris. Early reports indicated that thousands of people were affected and hundreds of homes destroyed.

Cyclone Remal | India and Bengladesh

May 2024: Cyclone Remal moved across Bangladesh and eastern India, prompting over a million to evacuate their homes. Estimates indicated over a hundred thousand homes were destroyed and sanitation infrastructure was damaged.

Flooding in Sri Lanka | Sri Lanka

June 2024: Heavy monsoons struck Sri Lanka which caused severe flooding throughout the island, including in Colombo, as well as landslides. Schools were closed nationwide and tens of thousands were estimated impacted, either through displacement, inability to travel, or lost utilities.

Hurricane Beryl | Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica, Mexico, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and the United States of America

July 2024: Hurricane Beryl made landfall across several Caribbean states as a Category 3 or 4 storm, before crossing parts of Mexico and landing in Texas. Some islands were devastated with a majority of their homes damaged, and areas of continental North America experienced significant flooding.

Landslides in Southern Ethiopia| Ethiopia

July 2024: Heavy rains led to a series of landslides in a remote area of Gofa, Ethiopia.

Wildfires in Alberta | Canada

July 2024: In late July, over one hundred wildfires across Alberta threatened forest protection areas as well as towns in and around Jasper National Park.

Tropical Cyclones & Flooding | Philippines

July 2024: Philippines experienced damage from intense rainfall over the course of several months. Following monsoon rains, Cyclone Gaemi caused flooding and landslides in July, displacing over half a million people and inundating the capital. The country was also struck by Yagi as a Super Typhoon in early September; most recently, the deluge from Storm Trami created more coastal flooding and landslides in northern Philippines.

Monsoon Floods & Landslides in India | India

July 2024: Monsoon season led to a series of disasters across India, including flooding in Assam and landslides in Karnataka and Kerala.

Flooding in Sudan | Sudan

August 2024: Parts of Sudan saw torrential rains which burst the Arba’at dam, affecting at least 50,000 people living in the area. UN agencies estimated the rains had displaced tens of thousands more throughout the country.

Flooding in Central Europe | Czechia, Hungary, Poland, and Romania

September 2024: Flash floods struck Poland, Czechia, Romania, and Hungary and thousands were evacuated from their homes, and infrastructure damage- to bridges, electricity, and shelter- was widespread.

Typhoon Yagi | China, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam

September 2024: Cyclone Yagi grew into a supertyphoon as it moved through southeast Asia. It caused flooding and infrastructure damage through southern China, Viet Nam, Thailand, and Myanmar. Across the region, hundreds of thousands of people were displaced, with over 300,000 reportedly displaced in Myanmar alone.

Flooding in West Africa | Chad, Mali, Niger, and Nigeria

September 2024: Flooding through Mali, Niger, Nigeria, and Chad was prompted by high rainfall. Several million people have been affected or displaced, and fears of food insecurity increased as the effects of the flooding mixed with dry spells in neighboring areas.

Forest Fires in Peru | Peru

September 2024: Peru declared a state of emergency in September as forest fires broke out in 22 of its 24 regions.

Hurricane Helene | United States of America

September 2024: Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida as a Category 4 storm. In response, local nonprofits initiated relief efforts to respond in both Florida and Georgia as the storm moved northward.

Forest Fires in Bolivia | Bolivia

September 2024: A near-record number of forest fires in Bolivia were caused by human-initiated burning that spread quickly amid dry weather. Over 9 million acres were affected since June 2024, and the government declared a national emergency in early September.

Flooding in Kathmandu Valley | Nepal

September 2024: Three days of intense rainfall led to flooding and landslides in central and eastern Nepal, particularly around Kathmandu. The capital was initially cut off as roads were made impassible by landslides and debris, and floodwaters left many stranded.

Hurricane Milton | United States of America

October 2024: Hurricane Milton intensified rapidly before making landfall in Florida as a Category 3 storm, spawning tornadoes across the state and knocking out power for millions of people.

Forest Fires in the Amazon | Brazil

October 2024: Over 50,000 forest fires burned in Brazil amid historic droughts. Several thousand square miles of forest were affected, with both fires and smoke threatening nearby communities.

Flooding in Valencia |Spain

October 2024: Spain saw its worst flooding in decades after a storm brought more than a year’s worth of rainfall in the space of a few hours. Many impacted communities were located on the east coast of Spain, including some remote areas which became cut off as roads were left unusable by the damage.

Cyclone Chido | Mayotte

December 2024: Cyclone Chido was the strongest storm to hit Mayotte in over 90 years, destroying thousands of homes and damaging critical infrastructure. Many residents were left without access to food or safe water in the initial days after the storm. Relief began reaching the islands shortly after the storm, but still faced challenges with blocked roads and lack of electricity.

Vanuatu Earthquake | Vanuatu

December 2024: A 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Vanuatu, and was followed by large aftershocks with magnitudes as large as 6.1. There was widespread damage to buildings, including in Port Vila, leaving several thousand displaced.

2023 Events

Storm Daniel Flooding | Libya

September 2023: Torrential rains struck eastern Libya, leading to severe flooding that broke several dams and destroyed parts of the city of Derna.

Al Haouz Earthquake | Morroco

September 2023: An earthquake in the Al Haouz province, near Marrakech, damaged buildings in the city and destroyed towns in mountainous and hard-to-reach areas.

East Africa Flooding | Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Somalia, and Uganda

October 2023: Flooding from heavy rainfall throughout east Africa caused widespread displacement and damage, including in Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, Malawi, and Burundi. Over the summer, flooding from the Nile displaced hundreds of thousands of people in South Sudan. There was extensive loss to crops and livestock. Many areas affected by flooding already included large populations of displacement people, complicating humanitarian efforts.
