2024 Events

Spring Flooding in Kazakhstan | Kazakhstan

April 2024: Spring flooding from several major rivers in northern & western Kazakhstan had displaced over 100,000 people by mid-April.

Flash Flooding in Pakistan | Pakistan

April 2024: Extensive rain and glacial melting led to flash floods throughout Pakistan, including Khyber, Punjab, and Baluchistan provinces. This led to scores of casualties, as well as the destruction of farmland and thousands of buildings.

Flooding in Rio Grande do Sul Region | Brazil

April 2024: Intense rain caused flooding in southern Brazil, exacerbated by the collapse of several dams.

Flash Floods in Northern Afghanistan | Afghanistan

May 2024: Flash floods struck several provinces in northern Afghanistan. Many villages were left initially inaccessible amid reports of thousands of injuries and extensive loss of homes and livestock.

Cyclone Remal | India and Bengladesh

May 2024: Cyclone Remal moved across Bangladesh and eastern India, prompting over a million to evacuate their homes. Estimates indicated over a hundred thousand homes were destroyed and sanitation infrastructure was damaged.

Flooding in Sri Lanka | Sri Lanka

June 2024: Heavy monsoons struck Sri Lanka which caused severe flooding throughout the island, including in Colombo, as well as landslides. Schools were closed nationwide and tens of thousands were estimated impacted, either through displacement, inability to travel, or lost utilities.

Hurricane Beryl | Barbados, Grenada, Jamaica, Mexico, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and the United States of America

July 2024: Hurricane Beryl made landfall across several Caribbean states as a Category 3 or 4 storm, before crossing parts of Mexico and landing in Texas. Some islands were devastated with a majority of their homes damaged, and areas of continental North America experienced significant flooding.

Landslides in Southern Ethiopia| Ethiopia

July 2024: Heavy rains led to a series of landslides in a remote area of Gofa, Ethiopia.

Wildfires in Alberta | Canada

July 2024: In late July, over one hundred wildfires across Alberta threatened forest protection areas as well as towns in and around Jasper National Park.

Monsoon Floods & Landslides in India | India

July 2024: Monsoon season led to a series of disasters across India, including flooding in Assam and landslides in Karnataka and Kerala.

Flooding in Central Europe | Czechia, Hungary, Poland, and Romania

September 2024: Flash floods struck Poland, Czechia, Romania, and Hungary and thousands were evacuated from their homes, and infrastructure damage- to bridges, electricity, and shelter- was widespread.

Forest Fires in Peru | Peru

September 2024: Peru declared a state of emergency in September as forest fires broke out in 22 of its 24 regions.

Forest Fires in Bolivia | Bolivia

September 2024: A near-record number of forest fires in Bolivia were caused by human-initiated burning that spread quickly amid dry weather. Over 9 million acres were affected since June 2024, and the government declared a national emergency in early September.

Forest Fires in the Amazon | Brazil

October 2024: Over 50,000 forest fires burned in Brazil amid historic droughts. Several thousand square miles of forest were affected, with both fires and smoke threatening nearby communities.

2023 Events

Storm Daniel Flooding | Libya

September 2024: Torrential rains struck eastern Libya, leading to severe flooding that broke several dams and destroyed parts of the city of Derna.

East Africa Flooding | Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Somalia, and Uganda

October 2023: Flooding from heavy rainfall throughout east Africa caused widespread displacement and damage, including in Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, Malawi, and Burundi. Over the summer, flooding from the Nile displaced hundreds of thousands of people in South Sudan. There was extensive loss to crops and livestock. Many areas affected by flooding already included large populations of displacement people, complicating humanitarian efforts.
